Hand painted architectural signage recreating the historic “MAGNETOS” lettering on the rooftop parapet of Rathbone Street Garage in Fitzrovia, Central London.
Originally constructed in 1905, the building operated as a car repair garage serving early motor vehicles in London. During a recent refurbishment led by White Red Architects, the project set out to reconnect the building with its automotive heritage after historic photographs revealed the original Magnetos signage across the upper facade.
As part of the restoration, we were commissioned to recreate the large scale rooftop lettering using hand painted architectural graphics applied directly to the parapet wall.
The signage was painted in a restrained grey tone against the newly restored white façade, echoing the scale and position of the historic lettering while integrating with the contemporary refurbishment of the building.
Located prominently along Rathbone Street in Fitzrovia, the painted lettering helps re-establish the identity of the building within the surrounding streetscape while referencing its early history as a motor garage.
