Absolutely Studio delivered a large-scale public artwork across two fencing locations outside Woolwich Arsenal station in South East London. The project was commissioned by Places for London, part of Transport for London, to bring some energy to a station-edge site and improve the experience of arriving at the station.
The artwork was designed by London artist Darren John as a text-led public piece. Bold typography and colour are used to hold the space at scale. A primary “WELCOME TO WOOLWICH” message anchors the main elevation and is designed to be read clearly from the station exit and surrounding approaches.
A second artwork continues across the site, incorporating a selection of nearby destinations. These are worked into the composition rather than treated as signage, giving a sense of place without directing movement.
Absolutely Studio worked with the client team and installation contractor to adapt the design to the constraints of the site. The work was produced as large-format printed banners and installed across existing mesh fencing, with the artwork aligned to panel sizes, joins and access points from the outset.
The colour and contrast were set up specifically for these conditions. A darker base reduces visual noise from the mesh behind, while large-scale, light typography holds legibility across the full length of the installation.
The result is a more considered and visually active station edge, replacing what was previously an inactive stretch of fencing with something that reads clearly at distance and up close.
