Hand painted floor level indicators and architectural wayfinding graphics installed throughout the stairwells and corridors of Vita Student Lewisham Exchange in London.
Lewisham Exchange is a major student accommodation development in south London comprising two high-rise towers. At the time of completion the project became the tallest volumetric modular student residence buildings in the world.
During the construction phase we were commissioned to install large scale hand painted floor level indicators throughout the fire escape stairwells of both buildings, providing clear and durable wayfinding signage for emergency use.
The numbers were painted directly onto the exposed concrete walls of the stair cores, following the colour specifications defined within the architectural wayfinding design. One tower used white floor indicators while the second tower used a dark anthracite grey, creating a clear visual distinction between the two stair systems.
These stairwells are highly functional spaces constructed from raw concrete and exposed service infrastructure. Because of the textured surfaces and demanding conditions within the building, vinyl graphics would not provide sufficient durability for long term use. Instead the numbers were painted directly onto the structure, allowing the signage to integrate with the concrete surface and withstand heavy use over time.
Access to many of the locations was only possible on foot during the construction phase, requiring materials and equipment to be carried through the building to reach levels up to floors 34 and 35.
Alongside the stairwell indicators, we also installed floor numbering directly onto electrical cupboard doors located throughout the residential corridors. These painted identifiers provide clear wayfinding and building services reference points while maintaining a consistent visual signage system across the development.
